COLLAB COLLECTIVE

PAINT NIGHT GROUP

Paint Night Group is an unofficial organization of artists who have been meeting once a week for the past 14+ years to create art and share ideas. It is an ongoing event that allows members to collaborate, critique, mentor and discuss the purpose and relevance of art as it pertains to the individual, their environment and their place in modern society. Throughout the group’s fourteen year history of collaborative expression, PNG has used a wide variety of media to investigate dynamics, motion, equilibrium, de/re/formation, layering, collage, reuse, irrationality and their connections to memory, meaning and its application in artistic communication. The group’s current works are of a collaborative nature. The ego of the artist is completely removed from the art. The art is merely the physical residue of the collaborative process. Collaboration requires cooperation, some planning, some luck, and respect for the work of the other artists participating in it. While some are more successful than others, the works are always thought-provoking and interesting.

COLLAB COLLECTIVE features some of PNG’s most recent collaborative efforts, and also gives a preview of the upcoming Bird Project.

THE BIRD PROJECT / An International Collaborative Art Project

Collaboration between Beyond the Border-Art, Inc and the Paint Night Group

PAINT NIGHT GROUP will launch the Bird Project at the Beyond the Border International Contemporary Art Fair in San Diego, Sept. 2-4, 2009. This project will be comprised of over 60 framed collaborative pieces by art collectives all over the world. Each piece uses the same bird image as the springboard for the collaborative process. (a rubber stamp taken from an 18th century etching) . Several artists work on a single bird. positioned on a 6” x 6” piece of illustration board). Collaborators draw, paint, collage in a symphony of complimentary styles. A collection of birds will be gathered from participating countries and then edited down for the frames. Birds that do not make it into frames can be shown “loose” in a grid-like pattern of 6” squares. Framed birds will be 12’ x 12’ .

There will be an interactive art zone where all who attend the fair are encouraged to collaborate with each other to create more birds for the show. This area will have printed 6” x 6” birds like in the show with art materials to work with on elevated surfaces or tables. These birds can also be shown loose and stuck to the walls w/ putty as has been done in previous PNG shows.

The Bird Project started in 2004. Two shows were in San Diego with interactive areas for the exhibition attendees. It has been said that there is power in repetition and this holds true with this series. In 2006 PNG took they’re bird show to Amsterdam, Netherlands with 14 PNG members in attendance. The show was a big success. PNG only hopes to continue to create art in the spirit of collaboration and spread that spirit far and wide.
